Control Your Destiny

The winds of life blow steadily. We cannot change the wind, but we can change the direction
of our sails and use the force of the wind to take us to where we desire to go.

A helmsman on a ship makes continual adjustment to the trim of the sails. In stormy seas
s/he must be particularly vigilant, often making extreme directional shifts on each wave
in order to stay on course. Many ships have been devastated and many lives lost due to
neglect by the helmsman. The helmsman must know where s/he currently is and must watch
the compass; for if s/he does not watch the compass, how will s/he know when to trim the
sails? On a long ocean voyage, a mere few degrees off course can destine the ship for an
entirely different country!

Always must we look and see in what direction we are going, ever watching the way of the wind.
Always must we prepare for oncoming rough seas. Today the winds may be gentle but the wise
sailor knows that the winds change. If the ship’s hull is not strong and its’ sails not maintained,
a sudden storm may wreck havoc upon it, for even a mindful helmsman cannot weather through rough
seas on a faulty ship. If the hull is cleaned and painted and if the sails’ tears are repaired
during the calm, the watchful helmsman may navigate safely through the storm.

Particularly in the eye of the storm must we not neglect to fine-tune our sails such that we
might remain on course with the compass setting we have chosen for ourselves. The integrity
of the ship can be in danger when tempers run hot and fatigue runs high. When the winds bring
unexpected traumatic events, the wise sailor clings steadfastly to the ship’s helm leaning
heavily upon core values, knowing that the inner strength and faith of the helmsman will guide
the ship to safety.

The winds of change blow steadily. When the storm hits and you can’t see past the rain,
know that the horizon is still there, and that this too shall pass.

Have a safe week!
